Big data are data that are so large or complex that traditional data processing applications are inadequate for the processing and analysis of the data.
The challenges working with these types of data include curation, storage, sharing, analysis and information privacy.
However, the term ‘big data’ often also refers to the use of advanced data analytics techniques that extract value from data, rather to a particular size of data set.
UK Data Service
The UK Data Service is scaling up for big data and is working on a new platform which will enable users to use new techniques to capture, process, analyse and visualize potentially large datasets in a reasonable timeframe not accessible to standard technologies.
